Bridge Builders is a six-week intergenerational program developed by Bridgeworks director Wayne Dyson. It brings primary school students into regular, structured contact with retirement village residents through carefully designed experiential activities — building, cooking, creating, and conversation.
This isn’t a one-off visit or a feel-good photo opportunity. It’s a sustained program built on the principles of reciprocal learning, where both generations genuinely teach and genuinely receive.
Students develop leadership skills, communication confidence, and a richer understanding of lived history and human experience. Seniors share their wisdom, rediscover purpose through mentoring, and find themselves energised by fresh young perspectives.
Wayne’s background in experiential learning — including pioneering work with Outward Bound Australia — shapes every session. The philosophy is straightforward: you don’t learn connection by being told about it. You learn it by doing it, together.
