Building Trust: The Unseen Foundation of Success

07/02/2024 By Wayne Dyson Leave a Comment

At Bridgeworks, we recognise trust as the bedrock of successful organisations. And therefore building trust and maintaining it is critical. Recently, a thought-provoking conversation with a healthcare sector colleague brought this home. It drew parallels to the situation at Godfreys, which, after 93 years, has entered voluntary liquidation.

Echoes from Godfreys’ Leadership

Our experiences echo the lessons from John Hardy, former CEO of Godfreys. He was known for valuing personal connections over formal agreements. As detailed in a recent article by 7NEWS, the shift from his trust-based leadership to a more impersonal, contract-driven model marked a significant change in company culture.

Transformative Leadership

Conversely, a positive transformation occurred within the medical association when leadership moved away from sowing distrust. The replaced the resulting toxic culture by a positive culture valuing character and personal stories alongside professional skills. This pivotal change enhanced the work environment and also showcased how trust is vital for meaningful engagement and collaboration.

The Bridgeworks Ethos

At Bridgeworks, trust is more than a principle. It is a practice. Our many programs show that trust is the glue that makes collaboration successful. Without it, morale drops and conflicts arise.

Building a Trust-Centric Culture

These narratives across different sectors underline a key insight: Building trust is not solely about smooth operations. Instead, it is about shaping an environment where everyone feels acknowledged and connected. Leadership sees beyond skills and qualifications; it is equally about recognizing the personal journeys unique contributions of each team member.

Leadership and Authenticity

As leaders we should aim to cultivate trust-centric environments, taking the time to genuinely know and value each individual. By fostering a space that encourages authenticity, we pave the way for more profound, effective collaborations.

Building Trust, The Foundation Of Success

In essence, trust is the real currency of leadership. It is the unseen yet powerful force that determines the rise or fall of an organisation. Let’s commit to building trust, nurturing it, and letting trust guide us to new levels of success.
