Volunteering – the Heart Of The Australian Culture

30/01/2020 By Wayne Dyson Leave a Comment

Although there is controversy surrounding it, I get excited about Australia Day because it celebrates the wonderful diverse culture we live in. A big part of that Aussie culture is generosity and volunteering. How do you translate the power of the heart of the Australian culture to your organisation?

Recently we have experienced how volunteers have come together to get the job done for Australia.

It goes without mentioning the incredible work of the fire fighters, and I was particularly captured by an article in The Age a few weeks ago “Sikh group comes to the rescue with hundreds”.

Rich Australian culture
Journalist Royce Millar covered a story about a Sikh group from Sikh Volunteers Australia who packed a van with food and water and headed to Bairnsdale.

On their first night they had served more than 100 meals and were still feeding people at 1.30am.

How do you create this collaborative attitude in your business?

This really comes back to our essence as a leader.
Are people willing to go the extra mile for you? In a way, would they volunteer extra time to ensure the job is done?

You maybe their “manager” but would people vote for you as their “leader”?

Does your manner build bridges or burn bridges when it comes to employee engagement?

3 Keys in building highly collaborative, effective cultures

In our last update, I referred to an excellent book by Daniel Coyne “The Culture Code”. In it Daniel distilled 3 keys as to what it takes to build a culture where people go the extra mile.

  1. Build safety to make everyone feel comfortable in working together.
  2. Share vulnerability to show no one needs to be perfect.
  3. Establish purpose through a common goal and a clear path to get there

Bridgeworks Team Effectiveness program has these 3 keys at the core of outcomes. The process tends to start with point 2 above.

By getting leaders to look in our powerful “How Others See Me” mirror as to how they lead and manage, the path to vulnerability, building “safety” and aligned purpose can begin.

having run it with hundreds of companies since 1994, Wayne is passionate about the impact of the Team Effectiveness program .
