Why You Should Tell Your Story

06/05/2019 By Wayne Dyson Leave a Comment

The Power of Sharing Your Journey As A Leader

Why tell your story? Because telling your story is a powerful way to share why you are passionate about what you do. It is a powerful way to connect and engage with people. It is part of being an inspiring leader and it helps you consistently focus on what matters, whatever hurdles you have to overcome.

As Simon Sinek explains it brilliantly in his TED Talks and videos,

People don’t buy WHAT you do; people buy WHY you do it

So first, you must be clear about WHY is it important to tell your story. Here are a few reasons that may motivate you to
work through the process and prepare yourself:

  1. You feel a bit disconnected with people/staff/associates
  2. You are wanting build stronger relationships with people
  3. You want people to know what you stand for. Understand why your values mean so much to you.
  4. You are wanting to break down barriers
  5. You want people to know that underneath that hard nosed business person there actually is a
heart, passion and a cause you are fighting for

Leadership is dictated by your values and beliefs. These come from your journey, your story. It is worth taking the time to reflect on your values and beliefs and the challenges and successes that are behind them.

So to help you get started, we have set up a template that you can download here and use as a guide for putting together your story.

Run through the questions; this exercise prepares you for that moment where someone, at work, or in your personal life, wants to know what drives you beyond the pay check or job title. It helps you see and experience how you can share your story with others, spontaneously or in response to a question.
