BRIDGEBUILDER NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2008

Hi,

How Big is Your Ambit?

The root of the word "Ambition" is "Ambit" - an old term to describe the royal walk by a King around his 'territory'.

In his recent presentation of "Courageous Leadership - Lessons from Shakespeare's Macbeth", Richard Olivier talked about a leader's 'ambit'.

At least once a year a King would go on a 'tour of duty' of their ambit (territory and boundaries). It could be during this time that the King would reinforce his vision to the people, reinforce confidence, stability and connect with his people. It could be then that he would increase his ambit by taking more territory.

As leaders, we have different 'ambits' and different attitudes towards our current ambits.

How do you know what is the right ambit for you? Do you exhibit the right level of ambition?

1. Withheld/Repressed ambition - WITHHELD = Useful to gain time for reflection and to ask big questions "Am I in the right place? Is this the right ambit for me?". REPRESSED = Keeping head down, fear of being seen and or success and suspicion of ambition. "Who am I to make a difference?"

2. PURPOSEFUL/APPROPRIATE - Balance of courage and humility. Moving forward and stepping up when ready. "If not me, then who? And if not now, then when?"

3. Driven/Obsessed - Short term: DRIVEN - Necessary to get the job done, build business, survive crisis. "It's tough, but someone has got to do it" OBSESSED - Need to seen to be in control and/or to win others approval. Fear of failure. "No-one else can do this. Losing is not an option. Lunch is for wimps"

There's a place for all of the above in our leadership cycle - Where are you now? Where do you need to be?

Maybe Les Twentyman can help you decide at our next leadership breakfast - Don't miss it!

Have a great week!

Leaders are either part of the SOLUTION or part of the PROBLEM? What are you?

Leaders don't necessarily worry about what people think of them - they just get on with the job. And there's plenty to do, if its one day in the life of Les Twentyman. He's passionate, made plenty of mistakes, but has never lost sight of his purpose. Typical leader, I guess!

In 2004 Les was awarded the Tattersalls Centenary award and was a finalist for the Australian of the Year. He also received the Eddie McGuire award for outstanding services to Melbourne's western suburbs. In July 2005 Les was awarded the Paul Harris Sapphire Award, Rotary's highest award.

He is currently the Victorian of the Year. Come and be challenged - book a table and bring your team or valued clients. Come along and get 'your pot' stirred!

A Tip For You

Unalert Leaders Cost Deerly!

A key to leadership is being on the ball. Good leaders have their antennae always up. Just a moment of apathy means lost opportunity and a lost lunch! Opportunity is all around us - don't be caught napping!

Somewhere near Rochester, New York, Ed set out to bag his buck at 5:30 a.m. By 11:30 a.m., he was exhausted and hungry--and still no buck. At 12 noon, the mighty hunter Ed guards the remains of his lunch while a passerby snaps a quiet photo while trying not to startle the deer with a belly laugh...

Have a great week and see you at the breakfast with Les on October 10th.

All the best
