Virtually single handedly Dr Edward Deming lifted Japan from the depths of a depression at the end of WW2 to a
world powerhouse economy.
Deming made a significant contribution to Japan's later reputation for innovative high-quality products and its economic power. He is regarded as having had more impact upon Japanese manufacturing and business than any other individual not of Japanese heritage. For Deming this started around the language and attitude we use as managers.
In simple terms our language can empower or disempower. The nature of our conversation needs to encourage effective two way communication. This helps to drive out fear throughout the organization so that everybody may work effectively and more productively for the company. People feeling encouraged, not discouraged.
As managers the quality of our conversations and use of questions lead to the quality we deserve. Managers need to create constancy of purpose for continual improvement of products and service to society. All people need to believe that what they do has meaning. This allows pride of workmanship.
Why not rate your organisation or leadership against Deming’s 14 Management principles: http://www.qualityregister.co.uk/14principles.html
