Leaders don’t necessarily worry about what people think of them – they just get on with the job. And there’s plenty to do, if it's one day in the life of Les Twentyman. He’s passionate, made plenty of mistakes, but has never lost sight of his purpose. Typical leader, I guess!
As a full time street outreach worker for more than 20 years, the last 11 as part of Open Family, Les Twentyman knows more about our streets than most.
Having originally established the Care for Kids Program featuring high profile AFL footballers, the Smorgon Twentieth Man Fund Youth Refuge and the Back to School Program, Les regularly features in a number of documentaries, most notably the Ohio gun buyback scheme, LA gangs and, more recently, the highly publicised ‘Heroin without the Hype’.
An author of many papers, newspaper articles and his autobiography simply titled, “XXX”, Les has been awarded the Order of Australia Medal, the Advance Australia Award, Great Australian Achiever Award, Tattersalls Award for Enterprise Achievement, the Committee for Melbourne Award for outstanding service to disadvantaged children and the Centenary Medal for outstanding services to the community.
In 2004 Les was awarded the Tattersalls Centenary award and was a finalist for the Australian of the Year. He also received the Eddie McGuire award for outstanding services to Melbourne’s western suburbs. In July 2005 Les was awarded the Paul Harris Sapphire Award, Rotary’s highest award.
